Railways; none. In 1829 the Saint Helena Railway Company laid a funicular railway to carry cargo up from the harbour to the fort; the line was 282 metres long, with an angle of around 40 degrees. In 1871 it was closed due to termite damage, and is now the 700 step (now 699 step) Jacobs Ladder stairway.
